Missouri figures prominently in this list of the best small cities to raise a family in America – with three cities in the top ten! Lee’s Summit came in second, while O’Fallon and St. Charles took third and 10th, respectively. These cities offer good employment opportunities and are relatively affordable, and scored well when it comes to childcare costs.

To compile this list of the best small cities to raise a family, SmartAsset.com looked at data on nine factors. They analyzed data on income, childcare costs, high school graduation rates, violent and property crime rates, the number of childcare facilities, unemployment rates, housing costs, family poverty rates and the percent of residents age 20 and under.

2. Lee’s Summit, Missouri
Relatively crime-free – has violent crime rate of only 104 per 100,000 residents, 91% of high schoolers in the area graduate, third-most affordable in the top ten – median home costs only $1,175/month.

3. O’Fallon, Missouri
Scored well in our economic metrics – family poverty rate of only 2.9%, fifth-lowest in the study and an unemployment rate of only 3.4%, 20th-lowest in the study, full-time childcare costs only $5,700 per year.
